Urban privileges (‘keuren’) in medieval Flanders: charters or dynamic legal documents?

Summary Between 1163 and 1240 urban privileges in the county of Flanders often lack formal characteristics typical medieval charters. They consist solely a list legal articles preceded by general heading. In Flanders, such formless law texts are traditionally known as ‘keuren’. The most famous these documents is so-called ‘Grote Keure’ which Count Philip Alsace imposed uniform criminal on major towns his realm between 1165 1175. this paper, I argue that dynamic could be updated whenever was necessary: obsolete clauses were omitted, other passages modified new added time went by. At first, changes made to Latin second stage they translated into vernacular French or Dutch versions then became basis for further changes.
